The new years exercise program brought to you by the rock ‘n’ roll philosophy

Born To Run

Written and Performed. By Bruce  Springsteen

In the day we sweat it out on the streets of a runaway American Dream
at night we ride through the mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages on highway 9
Crome wheeled-fuel injected and stepping out over the line
baby this town rips the bones from your back
Ist’ds s death trap it’s a suicide  rap
We gotta get out while we’re young
‘Cause’ tramps like us baby we were born to run

Wendy let me in  I want to be your friend
I want to guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs round these velvet rims and straps your hands cross my engines
Together baby we could break this trap
We’ll run till we drop we’ll never go back
Oh wil you walk with me out on the wire
‘Cause’ baby I’m just scared and lonely rider
But I gotta know how it feels
I want to know if love is wild babe I want to know if. Love is real

Beyond the palace hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard
girls comb their hair in rear view mirrors and boys try to look so hard
The amusement park rises up bold  and stark
A Little Knowing, A little Fear, a Little Love

And a little wanting to Belong

Kids are huddled on the beach in the mist
I wanna die with you Wendy on the streets tonight
In an everlasting kiss.
The highway’s jammed with broken hero’s on a last chance power drive
Everybody’s out on the run  tonight
But there’s no place left to hide
Together Wendy we can live with the sadness
I’lllove you with all the madness in my soul
Oh someday girl I don’t  know when
We’re gonna get to that place where we really. Want to go and
We’ll walk in the sun
but till then tramps like us baby we were born to run

Oh honey baby tramps. Like us baby  we were born to run

PHILOSOPHY

There is a real  tendency. To look at this  as purely a teenage angst  tune, however it speaks to  everyone who. Is disenchanted with their regular nine to five rat race and  sort of sneaks out in the night to enter. “The mansions of glory taking some risks in order to feel alive.  The boys and girls  while not fully revealing themselves want to be noticed by  combing their hair and trying to look. Real hard.
The lonely rider  wants to find a soul mate who also believes that one day this life won’t be a “death trap.”  In short this song really is a cautionary tale about getting trapped in a place where you give up  your dreams for  a false  or “runaway American Dream.  It speaks of the balance of being unique and yet belonging which is something  we all work to finds some comfort with as our true gifts are revealed and our need to share and belong persists.  What his song  tells us is that this writer can’t sit still until all these things come together and needs to be running toward or away from somethings in order to get to the place they can walk in the sun.

The difficulty with running is of course where you run you take most of the fears and alienation.with you most of the time... you know wherever you go there you are.  However, the idea that getting different  surroundings and escaping can bring hope works for some, if only temporarily  some of the time.  Some find  more comfort in moving and creating. A chance for change and they were born to run

The signs we need to change or everywhere

THE SIGNS WE. NEED CHANGE ARE EVERYWHERE

Well; a majority of Americans are not fully engaged in their work, don’t trust  most of their political and civic leaders, and are feeling fairly insaecure about a future that seems to be spinning madly out of their. Control.  Song from the early 70’s  seems to strike a chord about divisions in our social structure and  some folks who wish to make a statement that might be just as true today.  so ...here it is

Signs written by. Les Emerson and performed originally by the Five Man electrical Band and  covered in a radical way by the band Tesla

Signs

The lyrics..

And the sign said. Long haired hippy people need not apply
So I stuffed  all my hair up under my hat and went in to ask him why
He said you look like a fine upstanding man I think you do
So I took off my hat and said imagine that me working for you?

Chorus
Sign sign  everywhere. A sign
Blocking out the scenery  breaking my mind
do this —don’t do that
dan’t you read the sign

The sign said anybody caught trespassing will be shot on sight
So I jumped on the fence and. Yelled at the. House. Hey what gives you the right
To put. Up a sign to keep me out and to keep Mother Nature in
If god were here he’d tell you to your face
Man you’re some kind of sinner

Chorusa. Bridge
Hey there minster can’t you read?
You’ve got to have a shirt and tie to get a seat
You. Can’t  even watch no you can’t eat—you ain’t
T supposed to be here!

And the sign says you’ve got to have a membership card to get inside UGh

And the sign said everybody welcome come in kneel down and pray
But wen they passed around the plate at the end of it all I didn’t have a penny to pay
So I got me a pen and a paper and I made up my own little sign
It said. “Thank you Lord for thinkin’ about me...I’m alive and doin’ fine OH....
Chorus

PHILOSOPHY

Well  this fits right into much of our social discussion and the social discussion that has raged on  in classic economics for  most of western civilization’s  history.  There is economic disparity and opportunities are often  handed out based on physical appearance rather than on the merit (if you try hard enough) meritocracy that is preached in schools and in. Middle class homes.  Upper class homes  often deny the privilege. That they have and. Blame others for not. Having the merit needed to move up regardless.of inequality of education and training. Opportunities as well.

The verse regarding  our wanting to fence in nature and control wildlife as superiors and using fences to even keep fellow humans out is pointed given our increased notions of our planet’s  ecosystems.  Finally l the verse that has the writier leaving a sincere note of gratitude about. Being. In existence and doing okay is a very telling  phrase about what the writer wants to say to the  greater forces in the universe regardless of the crimes  and misbehaving being done. Against man and nature by his fellow man

In the end the writer. Calls into question the rights of men to who  seem to be engaged in hypocracy to  make the rules for. Others and in a world that seems to be  displaying a lot of  hypocracy in many arenas this message carries some important lessons.

Keep On rocking in The free world.

So they had this tea party in Boston once upon a time and then there was this rock ‘n’ roll band

It’s Tea Party  Time in Boston and Time to. Grab some Peace of  Mind

Today  marks the  246th  Anniversary of the Boston Tea Party ...Now it’s likely that  there were some Irish Sea shanties and British folk songs played  the  most famous  boston band w2aited a couple of centuries to. Show up on the scene...what is that. Band... well that could be source of some debate so I’ll limit it to bands with the. Word Boston in their. Names and the names have to be. One word.

Alright in the spirit of. Rock ‘n’ Roll. Philosophy  I offer up
Peace of Mind.  Performed by Boston and written by.Tom Sholz

Lyrics

Now if you’re feelin’ kinda’ low about the dues you’ve been payin’ (taxation without representation perhaps?”
Future’s comin ‘ much too slow
And you want to run but you just keep stayin’
Can’t decide on which way to go
Chorus

I understand about indecision
But I don’t care if I get behind
People living in competition
But all I want. Is to have my peace of mind

Now you’re climbing to the top of the company ladder
Hope it doesn’t take too long
Don’t you see there’ll come a day when it won’t matter
Come a day when you’ll be gone
Chorus

Well everybody’s got advice they just keep on givin’
Doesn’t mean too much to me
Lot’s of people. Have to make believe they’re livin’
Can’t decide who they want to be

Chorus
Take a look ahead (repeat)

PHILOSOPHY

This song captures a lot of the bewilderment. Many people face in this. Time of rapid change.  Unfortunately  many people. Aren’t even looking. Toward the future except in fear and  they feel I out of control of  their destiny.  The “tea party folks” dumped the tea in the harbor because they  wanted a different destiny and. Could decide... the people who  feel congruent  with the sentiments in this song are  lost in a wash of change and really are struggling with  that.  It seems  simple to say that we need to teach people. How to adjust through change and teach organizations to  adopt change models of  planning and thinking, however that seems to be so much easier said than done for most.  As Boston says this whole thing leaves  some people  no longer caring about the rat race because they’ve decided the rats have  won and they just want some peace of mind.  Maybe adopting a change  framework. Would provide this peace of mind.  Maybe understanding that. Everything is not. Under your control. Would help too.
Keep on rocking in the free world... Chorus

Are we off to find the hero of the day without paying attention to peace and joy?

Some folks would say Metallica is a bit “twisted”,” however,  I would submit they have a whole lot of socially aware lyrics and a couple of their offerings will be featured in this blog for certain.  The first tune featured is “Hero Of The Day”.. here’s. The   YouTube. Link

Here are the lyrics...
Hero of the Day
Written.by James Alan Hatfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk L. Hammett
Mama they try and break me
The window burns to light the way back home
A light that warms no matter where they’ve gone
They’re off to find the hero of the day
But what if they should fall by someone’s  wicked way
Still the window burns time so slowly turns
Someone there is sighing
Keepers of the flame
Do you feel your name
Do you hear.your babies crying?

Mama they try and break me
still they try and break me
Excuse me while I tend to how I feel
These things return to me that still seem.real
Now deservingly this easy chair
But the rocking stops by wheels of despair
Don’t want. Your aid
But these fists I’ve made for years won’t hold or feel
No I’m not all me
So excuse me while  I tend to Howe I fell
So now the dreams and waking screams that ever last through the night
So build a wall hide behind it till. It’s light
Can you hear your babies  crying now?

Mama they try and break me...repeated

PHILOSOPHY
Metallica cranks out. This cryptic tune—or maybe not that cryptic if you  long for a sense of home and a sense of  being sheltered, but your. Past and your ‘home” didn’t leave you feeling like there was really  a home there including that one source of “mam’s love” that could protect and nurture. You  no matter what.  In  many ways the song  warns. That you can go out and. Make money, find and become “the hero of the day” and yet. That won’t really  bring you  peace and or joy until you find that comfortable spot.either with someone else. Or more importantly inside yourself.  Until then it will seem like the world is “trying top break” me/you always.  In short, you  need to find support to handle the demons inside and outside in the world.  A sense of home can make it easier, however, not everyone has. That ready-made sense of a hometown or a person that. Feels like they will always be there. To support them.  It would seem that if this song were written. To comment on social media “friends” it would  be asking us to pick some folks that we can. Support in a more complete way even if we don’t have  thousands of followers on “the Gram.”

Anyway it’s a dark song...but it is Friday the 13th!

Some things to consider if you are running on empty

When You  Get Tired of...

RUNNING. ON EMPTY
ARTIST AND. WRITER JACKSON BROWNE

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In 65 I was 17 running  up on 101
I don’t know where I’m. Running now I’m just running on
Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Running on , running into the sun
BBut I’m running behind

Got. To do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it with what you. Do to survive
In 69 I was 21 and I called the road my own
I don’t know when that road turned into the one I’m on
Running on, running on empty
Running on, running blind
Frunning On, running into the sun
But I’m running behind

Everyone I know
Everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I don’t know about anyone but me—
If it takes all night
That’ll be alright
If I can get you to smile before I leave

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don’t. Know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
Look around for the friends I used to use to pull me through
Looking into their eyes, I see them running too
running On, Running on empty
running on, running blind
Running on, running into the sun
But I’m running. Behind

Honey you really tempt me
You know the way. You look so kind
I’d love to stick around
But I’m running. Behind
Running On, You know I don’t even know what I’m hoping to find

Running On, running into the sun
But I’m  running behind

PHILOSOPHY

This late 70s classic by Jackson Browne (who I’m sure will be visited again for songs like “late for the sky” and “the Pretender”) nails a feeling of  drifting and disillusionment that unfortunately grips many people across several generations today.  Massive   Shifts in social demographics, the rapid change in the job market and  the very culture of work, the strange impact technology and social media  has brought to  everything from shopping to “friendships.”  Etc..

The song describes  starting out knowing where  you are headed and finding. You know longer. Know but you are still running and still feel somehow. You are behind.  So many people. Today use a comparison with others or an impossible perfect standard presented by media and end up feeling like they are somehow  running behind.  The sheer. Number of books and videos on self help and building your own business are  evidence to the fact that somebody.has a standard for you to achieve even if it’s not  you.

The “bridge perhaps. Holds the most promise because  one thing has not been lost in the whole craziness of running.  The performer still knows things will be alright if he can get people to smile before he leaves.   He simply states. That  “I don’t know about anyone but me”... and somehow  infers that that’s enough to stay rooted in making the audience feel better and know that everyone. Needs something to believe - even if  publicly  he can only state his own opinion.
I believe it is time to recognize that a lot of people are. Running near empty these days and  we should try to. Make them smile before we leave by sharing. Good experiences.  Browne says a lot of the people he used to turn to are in the same boat and I believe becoming aware of this makes us responsible to  try to fill up that empty spot in others just a bit if possible.  The song ends with the singer  bailing out on someone who  makes him feel comfortable  just because. He can’t shake the feeling that he’s running behind on a purpose he’s not. Quite sure of.  I think the lesson there is... engage where. You are and not to always worry about something too far out in the future unless it’s very clear because you will miss out on some  great ways to fill up a tank of someone else and yourself in return.

Well...that’s enough because it’s time for me to be running on...but I’m not on empty Peace and Joy  to all When You  Get Tire of...

Did Rush predict and teach us about social media?

Did Rush Predict Social Media Stress?

Lime light—Co Written by  all three members of the band

Lyrics

Living on the lighted stage approaches the unreal
For those who think and feel
In touch with some reality
Beyond the guilded cage

cast in this unlikely role ill-equipped. To act
With insufficient. Tact
One must put up barriers
To keep oneself intact
Chorus Living in the limelight
The universal dream For those  who wish to seem
For those who wish to be
Must put aside the alienation
Get on with the fascination-the real relation—the underlying theme

Living in a “fish eye ‘ land
Caught in the camera eye
I  have no heart to lie
I can’t pretend a stranger  is a long-awaited friend
All the world’s indeed a stage and
We are merely players—performers and portrayer
Each another’s audience outside the gilded cage

Chorus
PhilosophyWell...how many  social media profiles do you have?  How many  people urge to  “get on the gram?” Or post more on faceboo?  Anybody remember  “my space?” How about “Vine?”
I like social media for keeping in touch with  “friends” and some like minded souls and yet from time to time I find myself doing a soul check to make sure I’m  not lost in  “the unreal.”  I also. Have to be aware that sometimes I look for a response related to certain “posts”   And feel a micro alienation when  those don’t come....not often does a this happen to me but it does... and then I must put aside the alienation (no matter how self-created it is).
We, indeed, must “put up barriers” or more  effectively  draw  lines  so that our social media impressions and connections are in line with our “outside the gilded cage” values.  It’s really, really, human to want to belong to, and create, tribes.  Some of us are born introverts who are really hyper aware  of what we expose and when and others are  just out there all the time and yet others swing from side of that spectrum. To the other.  Rush just nails the  human need to be aware of being a public figure and an audience nearly all the time and it happens  whether  you intend it or not. In many cases.  You see we  no longer live in the Stone Age, the Iron Age, the age of “enlightenment”, the machine age, or even the  Information Age... we live in the networking and connection age.  Every age to follow will include  that element of our lives so keep the words of Rush in mind and choose your roles wisely and do not be afraid to change them to integrate social media with your “real” self.  Teach your children (CSNY)  or let them teach you (do I feel another. LTRRP post?) to navigate their  limelight identity because each of us  should be at liberty to “think and feel.”

somethings unpredictable but it’s your life have a good time

OF COURSE WE HOPE YOU HAVE THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE

Green Day’s (written by. Michael Pritchard, Frank Wright III and Billy Joe Armstrong) classic “Good Riddance/ time of your life”  is a Rock n’ Roll Philosophy  seasy pick.  If the listener/reader doesn’t see a life philosophy in this one....well maybe  I should  be writing about. Disney Classics, however I couldn’t afford the royalties nor. Could I go justice to any covers to avoid  the long arm of Mickey Mouse.
So with  little further ado...
Good Riddance/The time of Your Life

Another. Turning point a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the writsts directs you where to go
So make the best of the test and don’t ask why
It’s not a question but an lesson learned in time
It’s something unpredictable
But in the end it’s right
I hope you had the time of your life

So take the photographs and still frames in your mind Hang it on the shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what its worth its worth all the while
It’s something unpredictable  but in the end it’s right
I hope you had the time of your  life

It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right
I hope you had the time of your life

PHILOSOPHY

Since it’s a relatively  short song, I’ll keep the analysis relatively long.  I bet you thought I was going to say short—right?  Well it will be.. I’m just fooling around a bit.

There are two overarching. Philosophical  themes a in. This song.  First time moves us forward in life and we will  need to make choices that put us on one path or another without  always knowing why because  while  you can ask that as a question it in fact is  a lesson that reveals itself through  the living of experiences.  That brings  us to the second theme.   This song is about  experiences and collecting them and being hopeful that people recognize their value as they are being lived and remembered.  The title “good riddance” reminds us that some  experiences  can  be learned from and then the unusable parts of them can be abandoned or left behind.  The song’s chorus reminds us that  there’s going. To be some adventurous  unpredictable  aspects to our life’s journey, however, for the most part the experiences are there to  inspire us to learn the right lessons and build  the right meanings.
To summarize it’s a short little  meaningful tune and it makes the. Rock n’ Roll Philosophy standards with ease.

Just. For fun the link below is  my one-take  cover that will probably get pulled off YouTube...so listen quick or not...don’t let life. Grab you by the wrist lol.
