Born To Run
Written and Performed. By Bruce Springsteen
In the day we sweat it out on the streets of a runaway American Dream
at night we ride through the mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages on highway 9
Crome wheeled-fuel injected and stepping out over the line
baby this town rips the bones from your back
Ist’ds s death trap it’s a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we’re young
‘Cause’ tramps like us baby we were born to run
Wendy let me in I want to be your friend
I want to guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs round these velvet rims and straps your hands cross my engines
Together baby we could break this trap
We’ll run till we drop we’ll never go back
Oh wil you walk with me out on the wire
‘Cause’ baby I’m just scared and lonely rider
But I gotta know how it feels
I want to know if love is wild babe I want to know if. Love is real
Beyond the palace hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard
girls comb their hair in rear view mirrors and boys try to look so hard
The amusement park rises up bold and stark
A Little Knowing, A little Fear, a Little Love
And a little wanting to Belong
Kids are huddled on the beach in the mist
I wanna die with you Wendy on the streets tonight
In an everlasting kiss.
The highway’s jammed with broken hero’s on a last chance power drive
Everybody’s out on the run tonight
But there’s no place left to hide
Together Wendy we can live with the sadness
I’lllove you with all the madness in my soul
Oh someday girl I don’t know when
We’re gonna get to that place where we really. Want to go and
We’ll walk in the sun
but till then tramps like us baby we were born to run
Oh honey baby tramps. Like us baby we were born to run
PHILOSOPHY
There is a real tendency. To look at this as purely a teenage angst tune, however it speaks to everyone who. Is disenchanted with their regular nine to five rat race and sort of sneaks out in the night to enter. “The mansions of glory taking some risks in order to feel alive. The boys and girls while not fully revealing themselves want to be noticed by combing their hair and trying to look. Real hard.
The lonely rider wants to find a soul mate who also believes that one day this life won’t be a “death trap.” In short this song really is a cautionary tale about getting trapped in a place where you give up your dreams for a false or “runaway American Dream. It speaks of the balance of being unique and yet belonging which is something we all work to finds some comfort with as our true gifts are revealed and our need to share and belong persists. What his song tells us is that this writer can’t sit still until all these things come together and needs to be running toward or away from somethings in order to get to the place they can walk in the sun.
The difficulty with running is of course where you run you take most of the fears and alienation.with you most of the time... you know wherever you go there you are. However, the idea that getting different surroundings and escaping can bring hope works for some, if only temporarily some of the time. Some find more comfort in moving and creating. A chance for change and they were born to run
